Masahiro Tanaka began playing baseball during his first grade at Koyanosato Tigers. Then, he appeared to play for the Takarazuka Boys while attending the Itami Municipal Matzusaki Junior High School. In 2004, he moved to Komazawa University Tomakomai High School and played for the team as a pitcher.
During his stint with Tomakomai, the team won the National High School Baseball Tournament for two consecutive years. On September 25, 2006, several baseball teams such as Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, Orix Buffaloes, Yokohama BayStars and Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles selected Tanaka as first round picks during the NPB high school draft.
In 2007, Tanaka was named to the Tokohu Rakuten Golden Eagles' major league roster. During his stint with the team, he received numerous accolades such as Best Nine Award in 2011 and 2013; Golden Glove Award from 2011 to 2013, and Eiji Sawamura Award in 2011 and 2013.
During the 2013-2014 offseason, he was posted by Rakuten to Major League Baseball. Eventually, he landed a seven-year contract with the Yankees.
